Definitely better than Rosetta Stone, Designs are nice and everything is crisp. Might actually be easier to use too! Overall I would give this program a solid 4/5 and Rosetta a 3.5/5. Thumbs up to Rocket Languages!

I was previously using another app to learn Spanish. After 145 days, I could understand quite a few words. And form sentences from multiple choices that appeared on the screen. But I had a very difficult time speaking or forming actual sentences. Let alone, have a conversation. After 6 days of using Rocket Spanish, I feel that it is preparing me better for the "Real" world. The other app is more "Game-like." I look forward to my Spanish Time much more with Rocket Spanish.

I bought the French language version. Very good. I don't know about the other courses but I have a couple of reasons for not giving it a 5 star rating: 1. The pronunciation of the female speaker in the early lessons is often bad. She has a habit of not pronouncing the nasal "n" in the middle of words or in liaison word combinations. Consequently I use Google translate to learn and practice the pronunciation of these words. Google has a fast and slow mode which is also helpful but no male speaker option. Forvo pronunciation does but is limited in available styles. The best I've found is Acapela which has a choice of male, female, France French, Belgium French, Canadian French, emotive, flat, etc, but no speed option. The good thing is that the voice recognition system does recognize the pronunciation I use from Google etc. If I copy the speaker in the Rocket Language course when she uses words with "n" in the middle ( e.g. vingt, prendre, or combinations like "pas inquitez") it doesn't recognize them. NOTE, I am a native English speaker fluent in Chinese and Japanese. I have had many hours in language labs learning unfamiliar sounds.

Rocket Languages is the best way to learn a language, right after having a personal tutor. The lessons are interactive, there a lot of tools at your disposal and it is very easy to track your progress.

I am happy with the fact that it's not moving too slowly, but I'm getting answers wrong because there has been no instruction or discussion about conjugating. And I just had a quiz question on something not yet covered.

I enjoy Rocket Spanish because of the balanced approach to learning the language with a mix of spoken and written language. If there was an improvement I could make to the course it would be to make it easier to build group of flash cards for the words that are difficult for me to remember.

The Rocket Italian Premium level is great for learning basic travel phrases. The voice recognition software works very well and if you use all the tools they provide for you regularly you'll definitely feel comfortable pulling out Italian phrases when you need them. I do like to listen to the audio lessons several times though. Also I with there was more variety in the testing and practice. An exercise where the student is given a completely new sentence that they have to give back in Italian would be really helpful.

Rocket Languages is motivating me to daily practice with the many activities!!! I especially enjoy listening to the oral example and then taping my version. I feel that it will be difficult for me to learn German at 64 years of age, but I am motivated to converse on my trip to Europe in June 2015!!!

Classroom Japanese brought online - with room for improvement.
It's a well structured language training with actual Japanese speaking and good explanations of vocabulary and the language in general. The spoken Japanese really helps with recognition and pronunciation, great to listen to Sayaka and Shota. Having Rocket languages is like having your own language course online.
It is also where I find Rocket languages to be missing opportunities as it focus on providing classroom experience instead of supporting exploring the language trough individual self study.
There are many limitations on what you are allowed to do, for instance when you start a practice you cannot reset it nor show all vocabulary, you are forced to complete it. It would be better if everything would be available all ways.
The text-to-speech is also limited (Google based?), short words are often not understood (adding a random です helps), and longer sentences pronounced wrong is often corrected (saying 今日はいい天気です。でも、明日は雨です。without the rain is magically corrected).
The biggest limitation is there is no system to help recalling. Vocabulary may be learned but then forgotten again. A Spaced Repetition System is missing although it is recognized as the best way to remember tings long term. All the kanji, kana, sounds and explanations are there, missing are pictures and the SRS itself.
At least there should be a simple way to export it all to e.g. Anki to make up for the limitation.

Response from Rocket Languages

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review, Peter. We’re delighted to hear that you’re enjoying the structured lessons, as well as the recordings with Sayaka and Shota. At the same time, we appreciate your thoughtful feedback on areas for improvement, such as the flexibility of the testing activities. While we do not offer a spaced repetition feature per se, I would recommend checking out the Favorites system; this should allow you to build your own custom activities for those words that you find particularly challenging. Of course, this does not allow you to randomly revisit course content; for that, I would recommend the Module Certification Tests, located in the Tools section. We’ll make sure your comments are shared with our development team. Thank you again for helping us grow and improve!
