I have been practicing Italian using several methods for about a year, including Duolingo max, Coffee Break Italian Podcast, YouTube videos, and chatGPT. I've learned quite a bit, but I was looking for an additional resource to really ramp up my practice in speaking and pronouncing words. I was drawn to Rocket for its reputation for speaking practice, and so far, I'm really impressed. Some of the other tools I use include speaking practice, but this app really takes it to the next level by having you practice every phrase, record it, and scoring it.
Duolingo will have me translate an Italian word or phrase into English, but I always have a word bank to choose from, which allows me to deduce the answer rather than remember it. I like that part of my lesson in Rocket requires me to translate to Italian without a hint, which forces me to try harder to remember it. I also really like that I can record my own voice and play it back, so that I can compare it to the way the teacher pronounces words.
Like the podcast I listen to, these lessons have a teacher and a native speaker who explains cultural nuances, common mistakes, etc. And this really helps draw attention to areas that deserve special focus during practice.

My product review should be understood in the context of a man in his 70s struggling to learn a new language. Before purchasing the premium version of Rocket French, I had used Duo, Babbel, and taken an introductory course at a local community college. Duo is easy enough, not demanding. It is a source of vocabulary, but one can put in many hours without confidence of using the words in speech. Babbel promised more interaction, but the speech sensitivity is seriously flawed. Otherwise the program is brisk and challenging. My college class showed that one's hearing in late retirement is unreliable, so keeping up with students less than ⅓ of my age was troubling.
Rocket French requires lots of oral practice, which the others lack. The tablet version of the program (I use a new iPad Pro with gobs of memory) has a problem similar to Babbel's, where the end of sentences are ignored. I can test this by just repeating the phrases that are missed and it translates those just fine. On my desktop iMac, the program works just fine.
Rocket French is more expensive than the other drills, and quite possibly less costly to create. I find that the method is engaging and leans more directly on the need to listen and speak. It has become my primary learning tool.
I've been studying Japanese for seven years. That included a couple of on-line courses, and several of the major apps. I've concluded that the best combination of speaking, listening, writing and grammar comes from using a combination of Rocket Japanese and Japanese from Zero.
The pay-once-and own model is a welcome change from the subscription model so many apps use. My one regret with Rocket is their decision to remove the typing component. The "composing" aspect of clicking on blocks of characters is, for me, less useful than typing in my response on a Japanese keyboard.
Response from Rocket Languages
It’s great to hear that Rocket Japanese has become such a valuable part of your learning journey, especially alongside other resources, Doug. We're glad you appreciate the lifetime access model. We offer this because we know that learning a language takes time and consistent effort, and we want to make sure you have the freedom to learn at your own pace without the pressure of a subscription. Regarding the typing component, the Composing activity is still available. If you're having trouble accessing it, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected], and we’ll be happy to help. Wishing you continued success with your Japanese studies!

I am loving Rocket Languages so far! Its very well rounded, from speaking to listening, writing and reading. Its very organized and I can sense that my learning will go very far.
Finally, a course in Japanese that actually works for me! After numerous attempts to learn the beautiful but challenging language of Japanese through grammar books, CDs, and various software programs, I finally found Rocket Japanese, and now I feel that I am learning to speak and understand Japanese, instead of experiencing frustration and failure.
When I first started University back in 2017 I decided to take on the Japanese language and looked at so many resources. Rocket languages came up back then but I passed on it because of the price (poor student life). I tried many other resources but none of them really teach the language more than show you some phrases and make you memorise stuff.
I decided to try learn the language again and after finishing all the free lessons I figured I should make use of the discount and took the dive to purchase the course. I have only been learning for 4 days so far but in that time I have learnt more that I did in 2 weeks back when I first tried.
Everything is covered from written language, spoken language, grammar, you name it!
Highly recommend Rocket Japanese to anyone looking to give it a try. I'm sure the other languages are great too!
I am very satisfied with rocket. It makes it so easy to learn Russian. I will tell my friends about it.
Today is my 100th consecutive day [I am on 13.1] I am so glad I purchased RS.

I researched a variety of Spanish learning options. I decided I needed a solid, well-thought-out program that would be my every single day go-to “class”. I get to read as I listen (visual learner) and then I do their Activities. Later I use many other inputs (podcasts, youtube, readers, duolingo story, children’s bible) with my interest (bees, surfing, running) being the guide and allow myself to hop around on a whim.
With the confidence I gained, I finally cooked up enough courage and began using ConversationExchange. This has led me to ‘just going for it’ with locals I think might be monolingual Sp speakers. My Sp is ‘not perfect’, but I can communicate and I am improving every day, and having fun!
Some highlights of RS for me: I can listen on my trail runs and biking, interesting hosts/topics, Activities (what you sow is what you reap), ‘pep-talk’ section, cogent, computer or phone, convenience. It forced me/allowed me to develop my listening/speaking at my own pace and comfort level. Hopefully next summer will be covid-safe to visit Costa Rica and I will have completed Level 3 (with lots of review also) and I will be even stronger with my Sp.
