Rocket Languages review criteria
Enjoy learning it, Very good because you can always return to difficult parts. Had to stop for a while because of moving my home, but it was easy to pick up. From now on, I'll regularly continue. The target is learning the language. Unfortunately, my computer does not allow voice recording. I hope that this does not influence the study results.

As someone who's been using Rocket Japanese for years and generally liking it, I'm writing this review to express my frustration. AGAIN you have redesigned the app in a way that seriously hurts the functionality! Why do you keep doing this? (Especially with no option to switch back?). Why did you decide to make the kanji suddenly very small, forcing me to zoom in on phone? Makes the kanji lessons a huge pain! Change it back! Im getting tired of you guys constantly screwing up your own app!

However, please know that all our updates aim to improve the usability of the course and, therefore, your language learning experience. Rocket Japanese: it's been two (April 14.) months since the Rocket Language app for iOS has been updated and since I am not able to use it anymore as it is not possible to write in hiragana/katakana anymore. I contacted support, got (after days - and weeks) assurance that it will be taken care of - yet the "bug" update 2 weeks ago did not address any of my clearly communicated (screenshots and screenvideo) problems. If you work on iOS (iPhoneX & iPad Pro, latest firmware) do not download this app - it is NOT working as advertised.
A word to the support... promising an update and therefore a working app might "quiet" the user but it is contraproductive to take no action at all.
I'll be happy to re-review my feedback once I am able to use the app again. Until then... 1 star.

Hi Susie - We were having an issue with the length of time that it takes for an app to get approved by Apple (up to a week), which meant that any bugs took a while to get sorted. Apple have been working to reduce this time, especially for minor bug fixes.
At first I thought that Rocket Japanese was a great course. However, I became very disappointed with the way they structure things. The conversations are very limited and the grammar is poorly explained. Japanese is a very structured and logical language and Rocket Japanese does a poor job of conveying the structure. I am overall very disappointed with the course.
I bought the entire Japanese course, yet Rocket continues to send me marketing and promotional emails telling me to buy their japanese course when I already have.

It's boring. There is no picture to help me connect with the phrase or words. They throw a sentence at you and have you repeat it, hoping you remember. It's no different from when you just Google Translate phrases and remember them yourself. Maybe throw an interactive game or something. I wanted a refund, but there's no refund button either. I guess I'll just take this as my loss.

I bought this program to learn useful Japanese but it's not really helpful. The dialogue sets are more geared toward someone who speaks Japanese and not someone who needs to learn. As an example: there is a dialogue set about asking people if they speak Japanese, but not one that helps to you ask if they speak English or that YOU don't speak Japanese. It goes on from there. I've gotten very little actual useful phrases from this program and I'm upset I spent so much on it. My upcoming trip to Japan is not going to be helped by this program.

What I liked: Grammar lessons and examples. The conversational lessons are generally good, but I thought that some were not really applicable to what I wanted to learn. For example, several focus on "workplace" conversations that don't seem particularly relevant.
What I don't like: The speech recognition program is terrible. I get the impression that Rocket Languages (1) didn't adequately test this program prior to incorporating it into the course, and (2) doesn't seem to be interested in trying to fix it.
The speech recognition module actively detracts from the utility of the course. Please bring back the older speech recognition program or fix this one.
The bottom line: Not recommended due to speech recognition issues.

the audio recognition needs work. Also stop asking me to review every six times i record a word.

I hate the points and streaks function and you have provide no ability to switch off!
I am preferring the Pimsleur system far more.

Hi G - Ha! That's because no-one has asked for it to be switched off before. We can add it to a list of suggestions to look at in the future.
My opinion may change over time, as I will complete this series (I paid for it.) But right now, I am not sure I like this method, generally speaking. I prefer methodical, professional books such as Genki/Adventures in Japanese/etc which actually explain what is going on. For example: Japanese conjugation is a little tricky and this course (so far) is not helping. I also have a tutor in Tokyo, and nothing is better than that. Lastly, the Kanji exercises at the end are super frustrating as when the sentences are long, the stupid thing auto-places the words and I cannot get them in the right order even when I know it. That said, it's always good to listen to native speakers, but in today's world, there are no shortages of resources in that department.
