The voice recognition in the edge browser is terrible. I have to repeat 3-4 times to get a valid input and it randomly pulls up words that can no way be attributed to what I am saying. I'm working in a quiet room on a brand new laptop, so there is no excuse for it.

Response from Rocket Languages

Sorry to hear that, Karl! For the best experience, we recommend using Google Chrome, although Edge should also be compatible. Please reach out to our team ([email protected]) and we’ll be happy to investigate this further with you.

First, the positives: I love the Rocket Spanish Level 2. I had recently finished Rosetta Stone Spanish before I started it, and it was the perfect place to continue my studies and fill in gaps of vocabulary/grammar. I loved how the audio lessons have been perfect for making my commutes extremely productive and I particularly enjoyed how challenging the listen-and-repeat and real time translation tasks were in the Level 2 audio lessons. They prompted me to listen to a few lessons multiple times and really gave the listener the opportunity to try out new words and grammatical structures in different types of sentences.

Sadly, I was quite disappointed to find the audio lesson style changed almost completely for Level 3. I appreciate that the language of the conversations became more complex and fast-paced. However, the explanation of language points (especially grammar) has been very thin to nonexistent (I do understand there are self-paced grammar units, but these are obviously not delivered in audio format like they were in Level 2). Additionally, outside of the Rocket Review portion, the listen and repeat has mostly been focused on single words/phrases, and the real-time translation tasks (or listen-and-repeating in more varied grammatical contexts) are almost nonexistent. Unfortunately, this has made the audio lesson format feel quite passive and not challenging at all (except for listening comprehension).

Response from Rocket Languages

Great to hear you enjoyed Level 2, Dave. We’re sorry to hear Level 3 didn’t meet your expectations, but we really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. We’ll be passing it along to our team as we continue improving the course experience.

The product is not working and is confusing. The price is okay but some parts are working fine and others are the most horrible thing that is possible is that the "Play it part" is not working and is not compatible my computer and that is causing problems with the learning experience. I would not recommend it to a friend especially with quality headphknes

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Teertho - Looks like we had a bug. Should be fixed now!

A very disappointing course. May I suggest that you review the free DUOLINGO course and try and learn from them. I have also found many errors in the text. No, I do not intend to go back through and innumerate them for you.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Ian - Rocket Spanish had a full review in 2016, I would hope that everything is fine now! (Update 2020: We are going through another full review of Rocket Spanish right now, this should be complete by June 2020)

I couldn't get into it as I am at a more advanced level and I could find much in my trial edition. I never signed up to pay because of that. I didn't use customer service and can't really say about the price and I don't remember what it was. I'm guessing it would be okay if I had seen that the program was helpful in the trial. It would help to have a more helpful trial version.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Mago - If you did sign up for a Level and found it was either too easy or too hard then we would gladly swap it free of charge to a more suitable one.

I was astonished by the sexism and gender stereotypes, there were even lessons about the nativity. I wanted to share these lessons with my partner, who is more advanced than me, but I was too embarrassed, and some lessons were unlistenable for me, due to these problems.

Also, the lessons themselves tend to just ask you to repeat what you have heard, and only occasionally challenge the listener to take what they've learned in the lesson an actually apply it to make new sentences.

On a positive note I was pleased that the instructors would often add multiple ways of saying things.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Nicholas - Thanks for your feedback, and we will take that onboard at our annual review of course content. Certainly the stereotyping is an issue we are looking at, even though a lot of these attitudes are still prevalent in South American culture. As is Christianity, hence the nativity lessons.

It is too frustrating. It doesn’t always understand what I am saying, even if I am saying it correctly. I don’t think I should have to know every ñ, é, á etc. when I am writing. It takes way too long. Need to shorten the lessons. I haven’t been doing them b/c I get too frustrated when it doesn’t understand me.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Polly - Please make sure that you are using a headset microphone for best results with voice recognition. We have just added in special character keys to Rocket Spanish "Write it" activities to make the writing process much easier.

I've been using the Rocket Spanish for 53 days, and while it has some good points, it's not an effective program for learning Spanish. The co-host, Mauricio, does not speak clearly enough for a beginner to understand, and there are some times when he is clearly not saying the sentence that is on the screen. I might recommend this program for business travelers, since that is mainly what the lessons are about (getting a hotel, booking a flight, ordering in a restaurant), but even then, you won't become fluent. You will just learn what you need to know to get around in that country. I've just requested a refund.

Response from Rocket Languages

Hi Jennifer - Thanks for your feedback. Getting to grips with hearing and understanding a new language can take a while, and has proven to be very person dependent. I would recommend that you listen to a Spanish radio station while you are at work or commuting. It will help you get used to the rhythm of Spanish and make Mauricio easier to understand! Of course, your refund will be processed asap!

It says to write something awesome about Rocket languages. I can't. The voice recognition is absolutely terrible. I have changed the setting from default, to "Easy" and to "Hard", and it still doesn't recognise half of what I say. I can't complete the exercises properly because it fails to recognise most speech. It marks me down. It is REALLY slowing down my progress. I have tried: emphasising words with clear enunciation, speaking louder and softer, and speaking slowly. Still most of the time, even with simple words like "soy" and "doctor" it interprets them a something completely and randomly different, even with vowel sounds that aren't in the words. The rest of the time I just get the message that it "didn't catch that". I don't have a speech impediment. So should this review really give such low grading JUST because of one thing, the speech recognition? Yes, because the speech recognition is used in about 80% of the course sections.

Response from Rocket Languages

Thanks so much for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the voice recognition. If you're not already, we strongly recommend that you use a headset to record yourself. If you are using your inbuilt mic, then it's likely that it will be picking up lots of background noise, and affecting your results. If you continue to have trouble, please contact our customer support team on [email protected]
