I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to try to use this program. The program has so much trouble hearing what I'm repeating back to it. The company's FAQ says to use headsets; I am. Then it says it's because they have it tuned to "native speakers." Well, what good does that do a person who is not native? I don't think native speakers are using RF! I'm not new to the French language so my pronunciation is not bad. I can only imagine how annoyed someone completely new to this would be feeling right now. If it's anything close to how I feel, it's not very good.
Response from Rocket Languages
Hi Lynn - I have emailed you to find out more about what's going on. The voice recognition system works off a Google database so it should be very exact.
I'll move to Mexico and just immerse myself in the culture and surely I'll learn Spanish, I thought. Nope. Even knowing a little bit of Spanish going in wasn't enough to help me converse in my new country. I tried several other programs, studied on my own, and memorized barrels full of vocabulary words. . . but I feel like Rocket Languages has really helped me learn to speak meaningful Spanish! There's something about the structure of the program that helps me communicate in the country I now live in.
Is it a little pricey? Yes. But it's far less than taking intensive Spanish classes and if I practice daily, have conversations in Spanish regularly (my goal is 10 convos with strangers in Spanish a week), and take Rocket's classes 3x per week, I note that my ability to converse, read/comprehend increases daily.
The content of the course seems good through module 1. The voice recognition has some challenges at times. An example is even though I say the phrase and it is recorded for playback, the system will indicate that it did not get it and therefore cannot validate it. The nice playback feature in Windows is not available in Android.
My teacher told me about it so I started doing it a week ago
Totally worth it. I was skeptical because rocket language is a huge name so there's of course going to be some mixed reviews out there (which I looked into). And honestly I can say the bad reviews are just so ridiculous, and some people just expect language courses to fit their VERY exact needs as if the platform should be sculpted around their brain. Personally, i'm very particular about learning a new language considering my short attention span with academics. I needed something that didn't feel like flat out studying and homeworky. But this really is a solid course for sure and my motivation to hop onto rocket doesn't fade each day because it's not just simply studying vocabulary and phrases over and over again. The platform and teaching style is very effective for me, especially since the different review tools/ activities after the lesson isn't as simple as just flashcards or whatever. It really helps you nail down the material from each lesson.
First of all, In the middle of exercises (as I'm trying to speak a German phrase) I get annoying popup windows asking me to write a review of Rocket German. I think that's pretty indicative of how much Rocket cares about me actually learning, an how much it just wants more business. In fact, just above this box where I'm typing, Rocket has a link to some "example reviews" which are glowing reports of how when you buy RG, all your wildest fantasies will come true. Since RG insists, though, here is my review...***
Right after I paid $250 dollars for the three German courses (the first of which I didn't even want, but you have no option to remove it from the bundle) I get directed to another page telling me I should really also buy another add-on course that normally costs $50, but they're going to give it to me for $30. Classic used-car salesman tactic. I decline. I'm directed to another page saying "Ok, we'll give it to you for $20, but only if you buy it right now. No kidding, this is your last chance!" Does it get any more sleazy than that?***
The German course was clearly written by native German speakers, which is good, but not really checked by a native English speaker for the quality of the English dialogue.
I purchased Rocket Languages Spanish and German over five years ago and did so because the program was rather inexpensive when compared to Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur which I have also purchased and enjoy. I do feel Rocket Languages is actually the better of the three programs and the reason I purchased two languages was because I can use Spanish everyday at work. I have a lot of patients who only speak Spanish and I have to rely on others to translate for me and I am getting tired of relying on them. I chose German because I used to live in Germany and tried to learn the language but everyone spoke English so I seldom had an opportunity to practice German. I will say I like the Spanish program better than the German one because Mauricio sends me weekly updates to encourage me to continue practicing with new phrases . I haven't heard from Paul in five years. Since Mauricio send me the updates I started thinking last week if I had just studied for 15 minutes a day these past five years I would probably be fluent enough to converse with my patients so I decided to reengage with rocket languages and see where the next five years finds me. Hasta Pronto
Having spent hours researching various language applications I chose Rocket German. It's an amazing, comprehensive course at an excellent price. Other courses cost as much for just 12 months!
I know a little German, picked up from travelling, but wanted to learn the language properly. I started only last week and have whisked through several lessons already and am astonished at how much I've learned - and retained. I'm not far off 70 so didn't expect to be able to learn so quickly but just by hearing and repeating words and phrases, they seem to stick so I wake up with odd words and phrases in my head. Of course, some words/phrases need more rehearsing than others but you can't expect to learn without effort!
The only issue I have, and I think this is because of how my brain is wired, is that when faced with sentences containing 'an', 'im' 'am' I really need to know when and why each is used; it's these little words that catch me out. I need an explanation of their usage to help me work it out because it's so hard to simply remember by phrase and I'm so eager to be able to apply the structure to new sentences. I'm certain that this is a grammar lesson that will follow later but I feel I need this now.
Listening to different German speakers is incredibly helpful. I realize that I've picked up bad habits and this is helping me to adjust my pronunciation quite quickly.
Overall, brilliant course. Can't recommend highly enough.
This is a easy and simple program for anyone to learn any language at their own pace. I love it, thank you to the creator of it and to the public library for providing this awesome tool...I am very grateful...I'll be an avid speaker of Espanol rapido, uno ano (one year)...Gracias!
The thing that caught my eye about this product was the one time payment. I would much rather pay a hefty fee once than a small one over the course of the year, only to have to cancel it at a later date. It's a small thing, but super nice to me because now I feel no rush to practice or study. I've read a couple other reviews and would like to address that for any would be buyers: First off, the biggest complaint I see in the reviews is the voice recognition software sucks. So what? Don't use it. I've had this product for a while now and I've never used the voice recognition thing, not because it's bad but rather just because I don't need to. I listen to this when I'm jogging, or in a cafe, and I mumble the phrases back if at all. I practice by myself at home too. You don't need a microphone or a computer to repeat what you hear. The other con is the price, and like I addressed earlier, it may not be free but it's better than most free products such as Duolingo, and it's far better than subscription-based services. All I can say is this is working really well for me, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. Haven't needed the customer service yet, but I'm sure it's as good as everything else.
