I think the overall teaching style of this program is pretty great, but the execution is not there yet.
The major shortcoming is the male's pronunciation. I am a complete beginner to studying Chinese, but it's incredibly obvious his pronunciation is absolutely awful. During the conversations, I can understand the female perfectly fine, but I still can't understand the male speaker well even after studying the lesson. I also worry that I may pick up bad habits myself even listening to his speech.
Another minor drawback is that I do not believe there is a way to zoom in or make the characters larger on the mobile app, which is unfortunate since I tend to study these lessons while exercising on an elliptical or other cardio machine, so the phone is a fair distance away from my eyes.
A feature I wish they would add in the future is increased robustness of the conversations. Instead of teaching us exactly one perfectly scripted conversation, teach us variations. Most of the time there are a handful of different ways someone could say the same thing, so even if the conversation is relatively simple in content, learning just one specific tightly scripted conversation is going to be pretty useless once you step out into the real world.
Overall, Rocket Chinese is founded on good ideas and has solid potential, I hope it will strive to improve and live up to the potential I see.
I have just begun using this product. I currently use RosettaStone and Fluencia and other online products, some of which are very good. It is too soon to make comparisons. I recognize it is premature to write an accurate review.
I've been studying German for about twenty-five years, including self-help books and audio programs, as well as taking lessons from a native German teacher. In 2009, I had the opportunity to attended an immersion class in Berlin. I recently began to think about taking another trip to Germany and Austria, so I decided to use Rocket German as a refresher course. I have been pleasantly surprised how quickly the program has brought me back to my previous level of competence ----- and then some. I plan on continuing through the Premium Plus program, and at some point in the future, when I feel I've gotten all I can out of the first two programs, I'll purchase the Platinum. In my view, the interactive conversations offered by Rocket German are invaluable, if you want to continue to improve your conversational skills.
With a hungry passion to learn japanese for years I started off using only duo lingo pro. I quickly discovered I was going to need more than Duo if i really wanted to learn Japanese in a year. I downloaded a few more apps and I was burning through them as well, but still discovered I needed more to satisfy my hunger. Why? Because though these apps were good i was constantly questioning grammer and how i was being taught. I searched online and discovered rocketjapanese, but the price made me raise a eyebrow. At first I wasn't even going to try it, but I really wanted to learn japanese so i decided to give it a shot. I used the trial and knew right away this was what I needed. I bought it and have been using it everyday for at least 2-3 hours while still staying up on my duo and other apps if I even still have time. The fact i get to speak, speak with, and be spoke at while learning was beautiful to me. Sounds crazy, but i will actually look at a object and away from the screen on talking parts to make it feel more realistic when practicing. This is great, but i feel like should only be purchased/used by people who truly want to learn the language because though i'm a rookie at speaking japanese even I know consistency is probably the biggest factor into learning. It's worth every penny and you'll see if you decide to get it with all the lessons you'll probably go "wow, this is going to take some time" but it's totally worth it, if you're dedicated and motivated.
I really like the interactive dialog with the conversation and chance to practice and record my responses and am pleased about what I've learned thus far. However, I really wish they would have more of this in each module vs. the 'self study'/written portions in each module. I learn best when I hear conversation/dialog vs. the dictation/response of the lessons. For example in module 1 there are 5 lessons of conversation but 10 lessons of pure dictation/response. This doesn't suit my learning style well.
I like the way review is spiraled into several lessons, so the words really stick. I also like the multimodal practice with each lesson. I expected to have some difficulty picking up Italian after many years of not practicing any language except English, but I'm learning more quickly and remembering more thorougly than I thought I would. Tutto bravo!
I started with zero knowledge. In just a matter of weeks, I am able to communicate well with native people. I find this method very effective and easy. Particularly I like the interactive audio lessons. Thanks a lot for making this.
It's the best language learning app I've ever used (out of more than a dozen I've tried). The voice recognition and feedback for speaking Hindi is incredible and coupled with the culture notes in the podcast -- these attributes are precisely what other apps are missing. The podcasts are great to listen to in the morning as I shower and then I can review the writing and flashcards in the bus during my work commute. It's feasible for having a job in which I'm traveling 50-75% of the year because language books are too heavy to carry to and fro internationally and in-person classes are too structured and expensive to meet my travel/work needs. This is the best app to take on the go. I've recommended Rocket Languages to all my friends who are serious about making rapid and meaningful language acquisition.
I have tried them all (Rosetta, Pimsleur, Duolingo) and I must admit that this program does the best job of teaching Italian. The reason is simple -- repetition. As a former teacher, I believe in repetition. Too many programs give you a lesson but do not reinforce it. Rocket does. Another plus is the response to my feedback. If I have a problem, I get a response within a day (two at most). Most programs don't bother to respond at all. Another plus is the detailed lesson given at the beginning of the section. If you really want to learn the "ins" and "outs" of the language, the explanations are there for you. All you have to do is read and absorb. Some programs (I won't mention names) never bother to explain anything; they just expect you to learn on your own. If you wonder why I have only given 4 stars for would I buy again, it is because I am not that young and don't think I'll be trying another language. If I do, it will be Rocket. Oh, one more plus -- the one-time price. Yea!
Overall I have enjoyed Rocket Korean. The one small thing that I have to complain about is how we take the self assessment quizzes on a lesson and have to know how to say introductory sentences said by the "teachers" such as knowing how to say "Our first lesson is on greetings", when it can be frustrating to someone who is just starting in section 1.1.
