Rocket German covers all the bases. It provides cultural tips, tips on grammar and pronunciation. What I especially love about Rocket German is the ability to practice multiple aspects of language-learning: listening to (and imitating) native speakers, using flashcards to check memory of words/phrases, writing words/phrases from dictation by native speakers, interacting in dialogue. In short, it is a one-stop language-learning experience. After an introductory lesson, there are so many tools provided for reinforcing that material that it is virtually impossible to leave a lesson without having that material firmly embedded in memory.
Overall, I've enjoyed the Rocket German product. It would be very helpful to have a set of audio control buttons (play/pause/rewind 3 sec) positioned directly beneath the Quick Settings on the left margin of the web page for the interactive lessons. When I listen to the interactive lessons on a computer, I constantly have to scroll from the line in the lesson back to the top of the page to pause/replay a word/phrase. Similarly, a rewind 3 sec button on the phone version is desperately needed. Lastly, I would like to see a video option for the Language & Culture Lessons. Reading through all of this is a little dry. I want to watch/hear an instructor saying these words/phrases. Thanks
I took up Rocket German after having not taken it since my freshman year of college. Over the years the sounds and words of German would spring up, wandering in a lonely path through my mind in pursuit of uniting with one another and creating meaning again. Rocket German gave me the healing opportunity to restore what I knew and build on it on my own schedule, while benefiting from the structure of streaks and badges. I've restored the confidence in German that I earned initially with a seasoned professor and lost with an unseasoned and unkind instructor. Thank you for an enjoyable and easily navigable program!!!
There is a lot to love about Rocket Languages - particularly the way you are encouraged to speak and interact with the material. The material, though, is the reason I am cancelling Rocket German Level 3. There are many useful words, structures, and conversations here, but I seriously have to question the didactic approach. Explanations of necessary grammar concepts were often missing or incomplete. Useless vocabulary (e.g. "Ha ha") is given equal weight with sentences much too long to memorize. Good model sentences are mixed in with numerous old song lyrics, tongue twisters, and "Max und Moritz" lines which should be presented just for entertainment. I was spending far too much time trying to weed out the material that had no real value for learning German. I must admit that I'm disappointed in this course. I've used Rocket French and was very impressed, but this course needs an overhaul before I can either use or recommend it.
Note from Rocket Languages: Hi David, thanks a lot for leaving us a review. We're currently in the process of reviewing Rocket German - so this is valuable feedback! We're sorry you weren't satisfied with the course and hope you might reconsider after Rocket German Level 3 is updated. Until then - happy learning! Your Rocket German Team
I've tried many language learning softwares and nothing compares to Rocket Language. Good for the price and for the most part it doesn't take that much time out of my day. It helps me retain by building on the lessons before. All that AND it's done in a conversational manner, because you know, when you learn a language you want to converse in it. I love Rocket Languages and I've become a sort of an apologist for them since starting!
I liked the rocket learning German course quite a lot, the several types of ways it helps you learn, either through writing questions or having you verbally repeat it back to a microphone. This all contributed to high rates of retention of the words for myself.
This could easily be a 5 star program, but there are enough poor choices by the designers that make it less valueable or frustrating to use that I am being generous to give this 3 stars. The bottom line is that it works, and it did better for me than when I used Rosetta Stone to learn another language.
I have been using this program for 10 months and have had 3 visits to Germany during this time related to work. This is where I think the program isn't good:
1. This program stresses in the informal ways of addressing people. Germans, especially in business, use the formal case (Sie not Du).
2. The program doesn't teach any language rules, rather just provides example after example such as how to conjugate a verb.
3. THe most frustrating part is that the program tries to inculcate easy words (Ja, Nein), and sometimes not useful words like Wunderbar constantly, but doesn't stress words that are important to know such as to want, to like, to take, to need. If someone can't get Ja and Nein correct after the third lesson, then they need to quit.
4.
Rocket German is my favorite online language learning website because Interactive Audio Lessons, Voice Recognition, Language & Culture Lessons are very helpful and very easy to use. I would highly recommend this website to my friends and family.
This is a great program. I've been using Rocket German for 16 days. So far, I've learned how to introduce myself, ask for help, tell time, count in german up to...one million, make some simple comparative statements, order a meal, and ask for directions/buy transportation tickets. Now, bear in mind, that I am spending at least 2 hours daily learning.. (which may be more than most can do).....but it's only been two weeks of time. If you want to learn a second (or third) language, then I think that this is the way to do it. As a point of comparison, I've spent years learning French in a traditional classroom environment..now... I am at an advanced level, but it took YEARS and thousands of dollars in tuition and a long stay in France to achieve this. I've also spent 6 months learning Russian in a classroom setting (again spending already hundreds of dollars) and I can say MORE in German ..having the Rocket course as my only exposure. In my opinion, with Rocket you avoid unmotivated teachers, boring textbooks and often the long span of time in between class sessions, because you can proceed daily. The tests are excellent and really reinforce all of the concepts and vocabulary.
This is a well designed system. You get to listen, read, write and speak. You are given the chance once and again to improve your pronunciation. The course layout is fresh and makes learning fun and pain free. It's also a motivating system as you get to see your progress, and you get rewarded your points that allow to see where you started from, where you are, and where you could be. If you want to learn German, this system does definitely help you. The question is not whether this system is good or not (it is undoubtedly good). The real question here is how serious you are about learning German. If you are ready to put the time and the effort to it, then this system is definitely going to help you... quite a lot.
